What awaits you at the Moulin Rouge
The Moulin Rouge – or “Red Mill” – is one of the most important attractions in Paris, with over 600,000 visitors every year. The theatre, located in the Montmartre district, offers a world-famous variety show with entertaining and erotic performances. Also, It is celebrated for its extraordinary architecture.
The Moulin Rouge is one of the oldest cabarets in Paris and boasts a rich history. It was opened in the same year as the Eiffel Tower, on the 6th October 1889, and was the first electricity-powered building in Paris. At the time, the Moulin Rouge hosted many famous balls, with the can-can and “le chahut” dancing styles gaining popularity. It owes its success to La Goulue, who was the first star of the cabaret and a very popular dancer.
Sadly, in 1915, a fire almost destroyed the Moulin Rouge completely. It was only in 1921, following World War I, that it was rebuilt and reopened.
The vaudeville has been on everyone’s lips since 2001 when the film “Moulin Rouge” shone a light on the theatre and its dancers. Since then, the Moulin Rouge has beat its visitor record year on year!
Did you know that it’s also broken many dance records? For instance, on the 125th anniversary of the Moulin Rouge, one of its dancers entered the Guinness Book of Records after kicking her legs up 29 times in 30 seconds. Later, the record was broken by a solo dancer with 30 kicks in 30 seconds!
If you’d like to be in the audience for the next record-breaking performance, it’s time to purchase your tickets for the Moulin Rouge!
