The Louvre Museum is one of France’s most iconic historical monuments and biggest tourist attraction. It sits on River Seine’s right bank in 1st arrondissement Paris. The museum is in the Louvre Palace, which was originally the Louvre Castle, built between the 12th and 13th century during the reign of Philip II. Initially, the structure had a defensive function but lost it when Paris began expanding. Francis, I converted the fortress into the living area for French kings. Over the years, the Louvre underwent expansion, which contributed to the structure it is today.

It is not clear if the Louvre was the first structure on the site it sits on or if it was a modification of an existing building.
