Free things to do in Rome
No matter how long you are around, a trip to Rome can be quite expensive. Did you know that there are plenty of wonderful things to do in Rome that are easy on your wallet? We have the lowdown on how you can visit some of the must-sees for free.
- One of the must-sees for all visitors to Rome is the Trevi Fountain. For all you money-savers, you don’t have to throw any money in of course – but you won’t get a free wish, either.
- Vatican Museums: Yes, that’s right! Every last Sunday of the month between 9 and 12:30, admission is free! However, you should arrive there in good time.
- Visit the Pantheon – a beautiful church from Roman antiquity. Admission is free of charge.
- The 82-meter-high Gianicolo hill offers spectacular views of the city.
- The Circus Maximus sends you on a historical journey: Where Romans used to stage fast-paced chariot races, there is now an ancient ruin. Ideal for a short walk in the countryside.
- Animal lovers beware: numerous cats are waiting for you at the Torre Argentina temple ruins, which are well worth seeing.
- Our tip: There are also some free city tours in Rome (e.g. via New Rome Free Tour). In the end, you only pay as much as you really want to.
Rome – The Eternal City on the Tiber
According to legend, Rome was founded in 753 BC, but archaeologists think that the first inhabitants settled there even earlier. Rome is the capital of Italy, while within the city lies the city-state of Vatican City (incidentally, it is the smallest city-state in the world). Rome is built on a total of seven hills.
Rome attracts numerous visitors every year with its variety of sights and especially historical buildings. Typical for Rome are the buildings from different eras, which almost create a chaotic cityscape. The small alleys and cobbled streets give the city tremendous coziness.
Shopping in Rome
In addition to art fans, all shopping fans in Rome also get their money’s worth! Rome is a true shopper’s paradise. While walking along Via Condotti (everyone should take a stroll here!), you will find many boutiques of some of the big Italian designer brands such as Gucci, Prada, Tiffany, and Giorgio Armani.
For the smaller purse, we recommend the authentic fashion market “Mercato Monti”. Here you will find a wide variety of clothes and jewelry by young designers – a paradise for all vintage fans! Classic brands such as H&M, Zara, and co can be found above all in the “Galleria Colonna” shopping center in Via del Corso.
The food paradise in Rome
Pizza, pasta, ice cream, or coffee – Italian specialties on every corner! There is probably no better place to eat than in the Testaccio district – the gourmet quarter in Rome. The new market there is also highly recommended. But don’t forget the cute little Café Barberini. Here you can get super delicious cornetto and tiramisu, typical of Rome. For all foodies among you, we recommend a food tour of Rome.
No Gos in Rome – You should be aware of this!
As in almost every city, there are some things you should avoid in Rome. So that nothing stands in the way of your holiday in Rome, we have summarised the most important points here:
- Never order an espresso in Rome. In Rome, they say “caffé”.
- It is never a good idea to visit sights spontaneously because long queues form very early. That’s why you should book online, especially for the famous sights. With our ticket partner GetYourGuide, you will find the best tickets at the guaranteed best price.
- You should also always keep an eye on your valuables in Rome. Especially at tourist magnets, crowded squares, and public transport; pickpockets often hang around.
