Sagrada Familie Architektur

Interesting facts about the Sagrada Familia

  • Originally, this building was supposed to be a simple church, but in 2010 it was elevated to the status of a basilica.
  • Gaudí himself is buried here. He died in 1926 at the age of 73 when he was hit by a tram. The Sagrada Familia was only one-third complete when he died.
  • When construction is complete, the Sagrada Familia will be the tallest religious building in all of Europe.
  • Also, the building will have 18 towers (each representing the 12 apostles, four evangelists, the Virgin Mary, and Jesus Christ) after completion.
  • Gaudi designed the building to be slightly shorter than Barcelona's highest point (the mountain known as Montjuïc) because he believed that no man-made structure should surpass something created by God.

The history of the Sagrada Familia

The Sagrada Familia has a very unique and interesting history. This is because the construction of the iconic building began as early as 1882, and the structure is still under construction today. The construction has entered its final phase and according to current plans, it should be completed in 2026. Although without advances in technology, it would have been even later! In addition, UNESCO designated the Sagrada Familia a World Heritage Site in 1984. This structure is visited more than any other building in Spain and is considered the number one masterpiece of the famous architect Antoni Gaudí. Don't miss this unique building and book your tickets now!
