Additional Information About the Louvre Museum

The Louvre Museum is one of France’s most iconic historical monuments and biggest tourist attraction. It sits on River Seine’s right bank in 1st arrondissement Paris. The museum is in the Louvre Palace, which was originally the Louvre Castle, built between the 12th and 13th century during the reign of Philip II. Initially, the structure had a defensive function but lost it when Paris began expanding. Francis, I converted the fortress into the living area for French kings. Over the years, the Louvre underwent expansion, which contributed to the structure it is today.

It is not clear if the Louvre was the first structure on the site it sits on or if it was a modification of an existing building. The Louvre got its French Renaissance style after renovations by Francis I. During the 1871 Paris Commune, the Louvre suffered damage when soldiers set fire to the adjoining Tuileries Palace. The fire spread to the museum and destroyed some sections. A glass pyramid, constructed in 1988, rests on the main court of the Louvre Palace.

A Place for Exhibitions

The Louvre turned into a building for displaying collections in 1682 when Louis XIV moved to the Palace of Versailles as his primary residence. It held exhibitions of royal collections, including Roman and Greek sculptures. The first one took place on 14th October 1750 when Louis XV put 96 pieces on display. Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres occupied the museum in 1692 and stayed for 100 years. During the French Revolution, the National Assembly declared that the Louvre should house the country’s artwork. In August 1793, the Louvre Museum opened an exhibition of 537 paintings to the public.

A good number of the museum’s acquisitions, including the Mona Lisa, were from Francis I. Some of the other objects were from churches across the region. The museum continued to acquire pieces that grew its collections to the world’s largest. Of course, the museum also borrows works to add to its vast displays. The Louvre Museum is not only an important landmark but also a great learning center about art and other historical objects.
