  • Completion: expected 2020
  • Architect: Santiago Calatrava

A masterpiece by a master craftsman: another building by Santiago Calatrava

The design for Dubai’s new futuristic building is from the Spanish architect Santiago Calatrava, known for his sweeping train stations, bridges, and buildings in his hometown Valencia. Among many applicants, Calatrava prevailed with his design for the (soon) tallest building in the world. He said he was inspired by the Islamic tradition: “These architectural wonders combine elegance and beauty with mathematics and geometry”. His last work was the Oculus Path Train Station at New York‘s One World Trade Center.

Dubai Creek Tower – Building and completion

The Dubai Creek Tower, The Tower Dubai, or Lagoon Tower, is being built in a completely new district developed by a real estate company called Emaar Properties. In this area, apartments are to be built for approximately 470,000 people. The tower will be the centerpiece of Dubai Creek Harbor, just as the Burj Khalifa is the heart of Downtown Dubai.

A giant needle on the rise

The preparatory work already began in October 2016; around 170,000 cubic meters of soil were excavated to make way for the founding of the tower. After laying 145 piles and placing them at a depth of 75 meters, 210,000 tons of concrete were poured to form the foundation. In May 2017, the foundation work was completed. The construction progress will be a lot faster than with an ordinary skyscraper. The estimated cost of building the giant needle is a billion dollars.

What’s inside the tower?

The Tower Dubai consists mainly of a slender trunk that serves as the backbone of the tower. Near the top of the tower, there is an elongated oval structure which is looking like the bud of a lily. The diameter of the bud is much larger than the trunk, which makes the tower majestic, making it look more like a building than just a tower.

Luxurious residences and viewing platforms at breathtaking heights

In addition to luxury residences, offices and restaurants, up to ten viewing platforms are planned. These are designed like gardens inspired by the ancient hanging gardens of Babylon. Apart from the interior decks, there will be many smaller moving platforms that resemble balconies at the edge of the deck. Half of such a platform is located outside the facade of the tower. These rotating platforms can lead visitors to an open-air space to enjoy the stunning views. A breathtaking look over the entire emirate of Dubai is guaranteed.

Where is the Creek Tower located in Dubai?

The tower is located in the district of Dubai Creek, or also Khor Dubai called and should represent the heart of it. Khor Dubai is a natural inlet of the Persian Gulf and divides Dubai into the districts of Bur Dubai and Deira. Dubai Creek Harbor is a huge urban development project focused on developing artificial intelligence.
